Mission
EAOP contributes to the University of California's Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) mission to raise student achievement and close achievement gaps. The vision of UC's SAPEP programs is to strengthen California's educational system in ways that will promote a vibrant economy by building a highly skilled and creative workforce.
SAPEP Mission
The goal of Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnerships (SAPEP) is to work in partnership with K-12, the business sector, community organization and other institutions of higher education to raise student achievement levels generally and to close achievement gaps between groups of students throughout the K-12 pipeline so that a higher proportion of California's young people, including those who are first-generation, socioeconomically disadvantaged and English-language learners, are prepared for postsecondary education, pursue graduate and professional school opportunities and/or achieve success in the workplace.
Purpose
The purpose of EAOP is to increase the number of students who have the opportunity to achieve a postsecondary education.
Method
EAOP employs four key program services-academic enrichment, entrance exams, academic advising, and college knowledge- to successfully help students attain college eligibility and attend college.
Scope
EAOP is the largest UC academic preparation program, serving over 39,000 students at 43 middle schools and 266 high schools.
Last year, EAOP provided 27,000 students with academic planning, 12,000 seniors with financial aid and college application assistance, 9,000 students with college visits, and 8,500 students with educational field trips.
Outcomes
EAOP students are more prepared for college than non EAOP students, by far. Three fourths of EAOP students complete UC's a-g requirements by the end of the 12th grade, compared to one third of students statewide. Read more about Program Successes.
Partnerships
EAOP has diligently created effective partnerships within the University, throughout K-12, and with businesses, community-based organizations and other academic preparation programs. Critical UC partners include campus life, admissions and financial aid.
Throughout the state, EAOP spearheaded numerous effective initiatives requiring the integrated efforts of MESA, GEAR UP, Cal-SOAP and TRIO; forged collaboratives with YMCA, Youth Radio, and Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association; developed a Math and Science Academy with Intel and a Family Inclusion Initiative with ScholarShare and Fidelity Investments; partnered with CSU, Santa Ana community college, and Santa Ana Unified in conjunction with several foundations including Kellogg, National Science, Ford and SBC. Moreover, EAOP promotes P-16 alignment, training educators regarding college-going process and facilitating relationships between schools and UC campuses.
